Sampson Levingston, a local historian, brings the past to life through his engaging and educational “walk and talk” history tours across the city. Levingston recently delivered a passionate oratory of stories that shaped the Historic Meridian Park (HMP) neighborhood and those that surround it. Levingston combines research with an approachable and personal style that challenges residents to see familiar streets in a new light and in consideration of history. His tours have grown in popularity, drawing community members who are curious about their neighborhoods and want to understand the forces at play that made their neighborhood what it is today.

Recently, Levingston led a highly informative tour through the HMP neighborhood. Participants walked block-by-block as he detailed the historical forces that influenced the HMP’s development, with a particular focus on the lasting effects of redlining. Through maps, storytelling, and real-life examples, he illustrated how discriminatory housing practices shaped not only HMP but also the surrounding neighborhoods, influencing patterns of investment, opportunity, and community growth that are legacies still felt today.

Neighbors could not help but to feel a  deeper appreciation for the HMPs history and the neighborhoods that surround it. Levingston’s work highlights the importance of understanding the past as a foundation for building a more equitable future. His tours continue to serve as a valuable resource for residents, sparking meaningful conversations and inspiring greater community awareness and engagement.
